What is a dental filling?
A dental filling is something that we do when someone has decay. The idea is to remove the decay so it doesn't keep getting worse and then when we do so we create a hole on the tooth. We don't like to leave those holes so we fill them with some type of restorative material.
Can fillings be avoided?
Yes, fillings are something that we do after there is decay. So the most important thing we have to do is work towards preventing the decay from happening. The most common causes of the decay are diet and not having great dental hygiene like brushing and flossing.
Can dentists do tooth fillings without drilling?
Unfortunately, the short answer is no. Once you have the decay we have to clean until all of that decay from the tooth is gone and after that decay is taken away from the tooth is clear from the tooth then that's when we actually fill the tooth.
Can my dental fillings match my tooth color?
Yes, there's a lot of shades, a lot of colors that we have here and whenever we choose the filling material for a specific tooth we make it based on what's the shade of the tooth.
Will my dental filling procedure hurt?
No, whenever we do any kind of procedure with our patients especially fillings we always numb the patient. After you're numb the filling procedure itself doesn't hurt.
Can I brush my teeth after getting a filling?
Yes, right after the filling is completed you can go ahead and go on with your life. You can brush your teeth, you can eat, you can go ahead and do anything you want.
Do dental fillings need to be replaced?
Fillings do not necessarily need to be replaced. However, if the cause of the original decay is not addressed, new decay can form around the filling.
How much does a filling cost?
It depends because not every filling is the same. Sometimes the filling can be a small piece of decay in a specific area of the tooth but sometimes the filling can be a larger one involving more areas of the tooth.
